If you want to know about Afghan food and culture, you've come to the right place. I'm Mirriam, and I came to America with my family in the early 1970's. I grew up eating Afghan food and always took it for granted until I had a home and family of my own and mom wasn't around to make all the dishes that I loved growing up.
So, I learned to make this food myself. I took lessons from my mother, grandmothers, aunts, cousins and from the very few books that are available on our cuisine.
Afghanistan is more than just war. It is beautiful and vibrant with a culture as old as the mountains its villages inhabit.
I want to share the food and stories of my Afghanistan with you.

Mint Lemonade Recipe - Mint Sharbat- Drink Recipe
This Mint Lemonade Recipe (sharbat) is so refreshing on a hot summer day, you can make it as sweet or as tart as you’d like. After I made this batch, I made another, smaller batch of sugar syrup because the rest of my family likes their drinks much sweeter. This is a great way to use up the left over mint in your garden.
Sugar syrup
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup water
Boil together until all the sugar is melted and the syrup just starts to thicken. Let it sit in the fridge until it’s time to add it to the drink.
48 ounces of ice cold water
20 mint leaves
The juice of 4 lemons or 1/2 cup of lemon juice (more if you want it to be tarter)
Put all of the ingredients (including the sugar syrup) into a blender and let it do its magic. If you want this to go faster and dirty more equipment, you can put the mint into a food processor in order to break it up easier because in a blender it will take a little while. Blend it until there are only microscopic bits of mint remaining. Add ice to your glasses and if you want, strain out as much of the mint as you can. Drink it up and stay hydrated. Its hot out there!

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated, “If any of the Messenger’s (peace be upon him) family became ill, the Messenger (pbuh) would say, ‘It (talbina) soothes the grieving heart and cleanses the ailing ...

Looks delicious and the commenters are right. Afghan food does not use garam masala. That’s if you want to make it taste like indian curries.

I love the side stories and advice. You’re so cute!!
Very good recipe that works each time.
Your recipe is 💯 great and soo delicious.
Nice. I do cranberry orange with kumquats and I like to add some caraway seeds into it. Incredible flavor. I got a bunch of fresh apricots the other day and I'm planning to mix in some reconstituted dried apricots too so I can make some apricot jam, but I want to find something else to make it special. My mother used to to brandied raisins and almonds with a bit of almond essence. I'm thinking to do something like that. Cardamom might be another interesting direction to explore.
Wow Mirriam I felt in love with your youtube channel. I love cooking exotic food. Yesterday I prepared this recipe and invited a friend who also loves exotic dishes. Here in Argentina is difficult to find black cardamom, a friend who came from USA brought it to me. Wow your recipe is amazing. It´s true that using sesame oil and black cardamom makes the difference. I also tried your afghan yogurt. Your videos and explanation are very detailed. I love that secrets that you tell in every recipe. Thank you for being so generous. I would like to buy your cookbook. How can I get it? Is there any kindle version? PS: The sound of thunders during the making of the video gave a nice dramatism! Thank you again!
İşte bu karga bile oynuyor
I followed the ingredient list exactly and it was excellent! I substituted making the dough for wonton wrappers, and stir fried the meat for 20 minutes, then finished in the steamer for 20. To make your own yogurt sauce I did 3/4 cup yogurt, 2 tsp dill, 1tbs lemon juice, salt, and 1/4 - 1/2 tsp fresh garlic. Tomato sauce was excellent and dumplings were extremely tasty and flavourful. 10/10
😊😊Love this
Is it also afghani traditional to do the same recipe with black tea? Or is it not common?
It looks yummy. I tried pineapple upside down cakes but not apple one, so I will try your recipe. Do you serve it with SheerChai? The two cups on the sides look like SheerChai.
Just u cook this type of recipes that I found.. I like it.. from Malaysia
It has just gone half past four in the morning and I could just eat that right now, I've got all the ingredients in, so I'll get my husband to make it for me for breakfast when he wakes up Thank You for all your delicious recipes. 😊
